aftercare
microneedling
Active Downtime: 48 hours
Our all time favorite treatment! Microneedling (SkinPen) works by creating thousands of micro-channels that trigger your skin's own collagen and elastin production, without heat or chemicals. Think of your skin as having a (controlled) injury/wound, that we will care for together in the days following.
-
Results will build on themselves; we usually recommend clients commit to a minimum of three treatments spaced 4-8 weeks apart.
Day 1 (treatment day): Your skin will look and feel like a moderate sunburn — pink to red, warm, a little tight. This is completely normal and expected. Redness typically peaks in the first few hours.
Day 2–3: This is your active downtime window. Redness continues to calm, and you may notice mild swelling, tightness, or pinpoint dryness as the skin begins its repair process. Some clients see light flaking start toward the end of day 2. Makeup is best avoided during this window — let your skin breathe and heal.
Day 3–5: Redness fades to a healthy flush, texture may feel slightly rough or dry as the surface finishes its turnover. This is when you can start easing back into your full routine, as well as wearing makeup.
Beyond: The Afterglow magic starts to make deeper change in the skin with new collagen and elastin building quietly over the following 4–12 weeks. This is why we recommend a series of 3–6 sessions for the most transformative results.

2-4 weeks before:
Pause any injectables two weeks prior and filler four weeks prior; if you have received neuromodulators (ex: Botox, Xeomin, Jeuveau) or filler (Juvederm and Restylane) inside of treatment the window we will have to reschedule your microneedling.
Pause any other advanced treatments such as laser or chemical peel four weeks prior.
3–7 days before:
Pause retinoids and retinol 3-5 days prior. If you are using an Rx tretinoin, stop use one week prior.
Skip any other exfoliating acids, like peel pads, at-home devices, or waxing on the treatment area.
24–48 hours before:
Stay out of direct sun and skip self-tanner on the area we're treating.
Come in well hydrated (drink water, vs. just applying your moisturizer); hydrated skin responds better to the needling.
NO alcohol and restrict caffeine the day before if you can; both can heighten sensitivity.
Day of:
Arrive with a clean face if possible — no makeup, minimal product.
If you're prone to cold sores, let us know in advance so we can talk through antiviral prophylaxis with your physician beforehand.
-
Hands off. No picking, scrubbing, or manual exfoliation while skin is healing.
No fur baby kisses; avoid kids/partner touching your face.
Skip most actives. No retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, or anything exfoliating until about day 5. Exception: AlphaRet Overnight Cream has been clinically tested for safety after 24 hours, and Alto Advanced can be used same day.
Sun protection is non-negotiable! Your skin is especially UV-sensitive right now. Apply SPF from the 24 hour mark and beyond.
No sweat sessions. No intense workouts, saunas, and steam rooms for 48-72 hours; heat and sweat can irritate healing skin.
Sleep on your back if you can for the first night or two, and use a clean pillowcase.
Makeup: wait at least 24 hours, longer if you're still flaking or tender. Wash your makeup brushes/sponges prior to using for the first time post-treatment.
See the products section below for instructions on which products to use, and when.

In the days following microneedling, we focus on supporting your skin barrier and speeding up recovery time.
(Plated) SKIN SCIENCE Intense Serum — our #1 recommendation post-procedure. The exosome technology works with your skin's own regeneration signals right when they're most active. The benefit is that clients will speed up recovery, reduce inflammation, and increase signaling for more collagen and elastin growth.
Hydrinity Restorative HA — A hyaluronic-forward layer that replenishes and reinforces the barrier while it's rebuilding, so your skin stays plump and comfortable instead of tight and reactive. This dual-weight formula binds moisture to the surface and penetrates the deeper layers of compromised skin, preventing post-treatment dryness.
iS CLINICAL Reparative Moisture Emulsion — an occlusive, deeply reparative balm that locks moisture in, and helps reestablish your barrier. Growth factors support healing, and this product will help reduce flakiness and dry skin in the days following treatment.
Hydrinity Hyacyn Active — A purifying mist we reach for multiple times a day for the following few days. It's the easiest way to keep newly-treated skin hydrated and comfortable without touching it — the active ingredient, hypochlorous acid, is anti-microbial and anti-bacterial, keeping the skin clean and less likely to experience post-treatment breakouts.
Colorescience Face Shield Flex or No Show SPF — non-negotiable every single day; we recommend using this from Day 2 forward. Colorescience’s SPFs are all mineral-based, non-irritating, and essential to protecting the new collagen you just invested in.
chemical peel
Active Downtime: 1-7 days (specific peel dependent)
We always say that a well-timed chem peel, or even a pair of peels, is the chef’s kiss to your longterm treatment plan. Embracing a little, (or a lot!) of flaking/peeling now can give a big radiance boost later. Here's how to prep and care for your skin through the process.
-
Every peel at Afterglow is customized to your skin, so your exact timeline depends on the depth we chose together at your appointment. Our customized peels are generally gentler and faster to resolve, while a deeper reset like The Perfect Derma Peel comes with a longer, more visible peeling process.
Day 1 (treatment day): Skin may feel tight, warm, or slightly stinging for the first hour or two — this settles quickly. Clients will leave with everything needed to care for it overnight.
Day 2–3: Skin often looks and feels like a mild sunburn — pink, tight, and can be sensitive to touch. For gentler peels (like our Acne Bootcamp Peel), this is typically the extent of it, with light flaking beginning around Day 2.
Day 3–5: For medium-depth peels (like The Perfect Derma Peel), visible peeling and flaking usually kicks in here. Skin usually looks worse before it looks better, and that's completely normal and part of the process of receiving a peel. Avoid the urge to pick or peel anything manually; let it shed on its own timeline. It’s normal for areas of the face to peel multiple times.
Day 5–7: Flaking tapers off, revealing brighter, smoother skin underneath. Some residual pink or dry patches are normal as the final layers finish turning over.
Day 10 and beyond: This is when clients say ‘the juice was worth the squeeze!’. Beautiful, radiant results show up on Day 10 and beyond — clearer tone, smoother texture, and a visible brightness that builds over the following month.

Skip any other exfoliating acids, like peel pads or at-home devices on the treatment area.
No facial waxing, threading one week prior to your chemical peel.
No direct sun exposure, sunburns, self-tanner or tanning beds one week prior; any heavily sun-exposed skin can't safely be peeled.
24–48 hours before:
Continue to stay out of direct sun and skip self-tanner on the area we're treating.
Come in well hydrated (drink water, vs. just applying facial moisturizer).

Hands off. Do not pick, peel, or scrub off flaking skin. Let it shed naturally; picking can cause scarring or uneven pigment.
No fur baby kisses; avoid kids/partner touching your face until you’ve done your first post-treatment cleanse.
Skip actives. No retinoids, AHAs/BHAs, or anything exfoliating until about day 8, where you can gently exfoliate last lingering flaking.
Sun protection is non-negotiable! Your skin is especially UV-sensitive right now. Apply SPF everyday and reapply every 2-3 hours.
No hot yoga, hot pilates, saunas, steam rooms or intense sweat sessions for 48–96 hours; heat and sweat can irritate peeling skin.
Keep it simple: gentle cleanser, barrier-support moisturizer, SPF. If you are using Face Reality products and received a FR peel, you can resume your normal routine on Day 3; The Perfect Derma Peel clients can resume their routine on Day 6-7.
Makeup: hold off for at least 24–48 hours. Wash your makeup brushes/sponges prior to using for the first time post-treatment.

facial | Glo2Facial | Hydrafacial
Active Downtime: 0-2 days
Our #1 requested treatment is our Glo2Facial!
Whether you're in for The Facial + Glow Finish, The Clear Facial, HydraFacial, or Glo2Facial, these treatments are designed to fit seamlessly into real life, and will leave your skin fresh, healthy, and glowing so you can get right back to your day feeling your best.
We believe you don't have to wait for a special occasion to take great care of your skin, which is why most clients book these treatments every month.
A little prep beforehand and a little care afterward is all it takes to make the results last.
-
Immediately after: skin often looks flushed or slightly pink for the first hour or two. We like to think of it as "just came from a great workout," not "just had a procedure." This settles quickly.
If extractions were part of your treatment: you may notice slight inflammation or slight pinkness around any areas that were extracted, and these typically resolve within a few hours to a day.
Later that day: skin should look brighter, feel smoother, and are designed to fit seamlessly into real life.
No real "downtime" to speak of: you can return to your normal routine, makeup included, right away. We just recommend giving skin a few hours to breathe before applying a full face of makeup if you can.
-
2-4 weeks before:
Pause any injectables two weeks prior and filler four weeks prior; if you have received neuromodulators (ex: Botox, Xeomin, Jeuveau) or filler (Juvederm and Restylane) inside of treatment the window we will have to reschedule your treatment.
Pause any other advanced treatments such as laser or chemical peel one to two weeks prior.
Come in just as you are! Don’t worry about removing any makeup you may have on, as we will do all the heavy lifting during your treatment.
If your skin is feeling especially sensitive or reactive, mention it when you arrive, as we customize every treatment to what your skin needs that day.
No specific product pause is needed for these treatments, but if you're using a strong retinoid or exfoliating acid nightly, skipping it the night before can help minimize any temporary sensitivity.
Hydrate well beforehand, (both drinking water and moisturizing the skin); well-hydrated skin responds best to extraction, infusion, and any oxygenation we will do.
-
SPF, same day; skin is more receptive right after treatment, which is wonderful for absorption but means it's also more sun-sensitive.
Give it a few hours before heavy makeup if your schedule allows, so your skin can fully absorb the finishing products from your treatment.
Skip intense sweat sessions, saunas, or steam for the rest of the day if extractions or RF were part of your service, otherwise, it’s business as usual!
Later that evening, focus on gently caring for your skin and resume your normal routine to following morning, (unless your provider tells you otherwise).
